Hopelessly witnessing the systemic enshittification of the internet made us want to celebrate the hackers and geeks that are fighting to keep the digital world independent. In times when reliable information has become a rare and questionable value, we’re constantly confronted with violent news, sometimes not knowing why we’re getting to read it, nor knowing how to determine its level of reality. Without the precious engagement of world wide web activists we would end up frozen like rabbits in headlights. So we yelled this anthem-like melody on repeat to loudly support the modern pirates of our digital oceans.
This song is probably the clearest example of what Coilguns sounds like today. Every member’s personality found its way into it, yet it doesn’t really sound like anything we’ve released before. It somehow brings together everything we’ve learned over the years while opening another door stylistically.
It also showcases the subtle depth Ben Chisholm brought to the record, especially through details like the pulsating synths. You can also hear a very old, beautifully out-of-tune hand-pumped harmonium that Louis and Kevin stumbled upon while Jona was recording guitars.
Tracks like this also remind us how much of a collective effort recording can be. Getting every drum sound and groove to feel just right sometimes takes hours — and every available brain in the band. In the end, that’s probably why this song feels so much like Coilguns 3.0.
